MEET THE PEOPLE BEFORE THE PLOT

Ten characters. A place to begin.

Who they are, what they need and the connections that help you enter the story. Explore their connections in the map above, or meet each person individually here.

Jean Valjean

Jean Valjean leaves prison hoping to find work, shelter and a place in society. His starting challenge is simple to name and hard to meet: being seen as a person beyond his record.

Javert

Javert is a police inspector who puts his faith in duty, law and order. His certainty offers a way into one of the story’s central questions: how should rules respond when people change?

Fantine

Fantine is a working mother trying to earn enough to support her daughter, Cosette. Her circumstances bring everyday needs into focus: secure work, money for a child’s care and room to be treated with dignity.

Cosette

Cosette is Fantine’s daughter, living as a child at the Thénardiers’ inn. Her place in the story invites attention to childhood, dependence and the care adults owe the children entrusted to them.

Marius

Marius is a young romantic connected to Paris’s republican student circle. Through him, the story brings private hopes alongside public ideals. Notice how friendship and political conviction shape the world he moves through.

Éponine

Éponine is a young woman who knows the hardships of Paris’s streets at close range. Her perspective invites a question before the plot unfolds: what does someone need in order to feel seen and valued?

Enjolras

Enjolras leads a circle of republican students who want a fairer society. His confidence and commitment give the political story a clear voice. Listen for how an individual conviction becomes a call to others.

Gavroche

Gavroche is a resourceful Parisian child with sharp wit and little protection. He knows the city from its streets. Through him, political questions meet the everyday experience of people who have very little power.

The Thénardiers

The Thénardiers run an inn in Montfermeil, where hospitality has a price. Their comic presentation invites a closer look at transactions and power: who pays, who benefits, and what gets hidden by a joke?

Bishop Myriel

Bishop Myriel of Digne is a clergyman whose life centres on generosity and care for people in need. His outlook offers a starting question: what might change when someone is met with hospitality?
