Bishop Myriel

Bishop of Digne

See the connections around Bishop Myriel

Charles-François-Bienvenu Myriel, the bishop of Digne, is the first person Hugo introduces in Les Misérables. In 1815 he is about seventy-five and lives with his sister Baptistine and their housekeeper, Madame Magloire. His place at the beginning establishes religious office as a practical responsibility toward other people. Before the central plot unfolds, Hugo gives unusual space to how this household lives and what its bishop values.
